How to install Emacs on Windows

Navigate to the Emacs download section, and click the mirror link:

shows the nearby GNU mirror link on the Emacs download page

Select Windows:

Download the latest Emacs .zip file:

shows emacs-24.5-bin-i686-mingw32.zip

Extract the .zip file

select Extract All

Copy the folder to c:/Program Files. If you want, rename the folder to emacs (this is optional).

shows a folder named emacs

Open the bin folder, and start runemacs.exe:

shows a file named runemacs.exe

An Emacs window should appear:

shows the Emacs editor being opened

Success!

You can also optionally add the bin path to your system path so you can type "emacs" from a command prompt to open Emacs. If needed, here's an example of how to add a path to your system path.
