How do I convert spaces to tabs in Spacemacs?

First, show whitespace in a file.

Then use v to enter visual mode, and select text (using h j k l):

Press ALT x and type tabify:

Make sure tabify is highlighted, and press enter:

Now you've got tabs instead of spaces.
